Lunch with James

Our trip to The Pizza Factory was very enjoyable! I really loved eating their yummy bread sticks and spaghettis with marinara sauce. James was well behaved at the restaurant, but I didn’t know that he was paying attention to how noisy it was around him, in fact at one point he said to me “Wow, adults are pretty loud mom.” Apparently the noise was distracting James from eating his food. It didn’t really occur to me that people were making too much noise.

After James mentioned that the restaurant was noisy, I started to notice it too and it was pretty noisy at the time. In addition, Right across from us and behind me there was two groups of adults seating at a table making noise( talking pretty loud). The group behind me was a group of girls and of course we girls tend to be louder than boys-most of the time! But the noise didn’t really bother me, but apparently it bothered James. Then he started pointing at all the tables that were being noisy. I told him that pointing was bad manners and he needed to stop doing that. But then I thought to myself…children are just like adults or adults are like children? Either way I look at it adults and children behave almost the same….especially when friends are around.

Smells, Cravings and Nausea

Being pregnant is one the most wonderful experiences, but when morning sickness comes along the experience is not as enjoyable the first trimester and sometimes the whole nine months. My energy levels have already become low with this pregnancy. Yesterday when I attended school I felt so tired after waking around on campus for only 20 minutes to get to my classes. After I got home from school the same day I walked around on campus, I wanted clean the house but everything seemed so hard and at moment I was wishing for a magic wand, so I could just tell the magic wand… “Make the house beautiful for the rest of my pregnancy.”

Moreover the smells have been so bad that I have had to go out of the classrooms a few times because someone had a strong perfume or something else. One time the teacher saw my face and knew that I wasn’t feeling well and she said to me “Here is a garbage can in case you need it” little did she know that the student behind me was making so sick and I couldn’t hide my expression. I sneakily moved my seat closer to the front of the room. I hope that he didn’t notice.

Nausea is probably the harder pats of my pregnancy because I can’t get rid of it. I am counting the days until I have my energy back, feel like myself, stop smelling everything, feel nauseated and stop craving The Olive Garden.

Was it a stroke?

I have had many different important events throughout my life but there is one that really taught me something that I will never forget. It happened in 1997 on a Tuesday afternoon. While I was working in downtown Salt Lake at a department store called ZCMI, I started to feel sick suddenly. I was sick from something I couldn’t discern. The symptoms started out with a minor headache while half of my body started going numb. Then my speech began to sound garbled. It got to the point where it was clear to me that something serious was happening to my body and I was beginning to feel sad and very vulnerable.

A co-worker named Penny must have noticed that something was going on with me because I was always full of energy and my speech was clear. She said to me, “We are taking you to the hospital.” As she was speaking I felt my left limbs going numb. At that moment I thought that half of my body was paralyzed forever. Even though I was feeling so sick with all these odd symptoms, I remember saying that I wanted to wait and see if I got better. But Penny didn’t wait; she said once more, “No, there is no time to wait. We just have to go.” So she held me as we walked out to her car and went straight to the Emergency Room at the LDS Hospital in the avenues.

Luckily, the hospital was down the street from where we were worked. As we pulled into the parking lot I was starting to feel sensations in my arms and legs again. However, Penny still escorted me into the Emergency Room. I sat in a room for a few minutes waiting for a doctor to come see me. I can’t recall the doctor’s name to this day but I do remember him saying to me, “Will you take your shoes off so I can see your toenails?” What a silly girl I was when I answered him. I said I did not really want to because my toenails were not polished. However, I finally took my shoes off and my feet looked normal.

Penny asked him if I had had a stroke. The doctor said that he wasn’t sure because he needed more time to run some tests. Then I was sent to a room for a cat-scan. While I was in the room I was asked to take off my jewelry and any metal that I had before I went through the cat-scan. The room for the test had bright lights. During the test going through the cat-scan machine, I had a lot of different thoughts come into my mind. Some of my thoughts were questions, such as, “Am I going to die without finishing that round table of shirts, or the markdowns that I was assigned to do?” I realized that I was so wrapped up in thinking about work that I literately forgot about the urgent situation.

After the five hours passed and all the tests were taken, the results were that I did not have a stroke. The whole process turned out to be no more than a complex- migraine headache. What a scary situation that was! All of this happened because that morning I had taken my birth control pills without enough water and without food. The diagnosis included poor hydration, bad eating habits and the birth control pills.

This event made me realize that I had not taken good care of my health. I had considered a round of shirts more important than food and plenty of water. After this even I decided I would take better care of myself. This included being well hydrated when I took my pills as well as eating healthy foods. In addition, I visited my doctor and changed my birth control pills that I was taking at the time.

This was a very scary event in my life. When my body didn’t function normally due to a complex migraine, I thought I was going to be paralyzed and become a vegetable. At best, I was afraid I would never speak again and perhaps even die. After the experience I thought more about it. I realized from this learning experience that I had to change the way I took care of myself. If I did not change my personal care, I might not be able to Iive my life in the future and accomplish all I wanted to do.

Jonathan loves to read books, but not just any books, he likes to read fantasy, sci-fi and more. He has read more books than Troy has read in his lifetime. In this last four days he's read four thick books, I mean 1800 pages. He is so amazing to me and he does most of his reading right after he comes come from school. I love how motivated he is!

When I get tired

What happens when I get tired? I start speaking with the wrong words. The kids and I had a little conversation on pronunciation here is how it goes:

Me, I really like this shirt daddy got me! But I wish that it didn’t have a lot of blink, blink.

Jon, what did you say? Blink, blink….

Me, yeah you know, it has a lot of little fake demon, I mean diamonds.

Cari, oh I think I know what you are saying, you mean sparkly—right?

Me, yeah that’s what I mean! What did I say?

Cari, blink like in the blink of an eye.

Jon, well I didn’t understand what mom was saying did you Cari?

Cari, I knew what she saying because that’s how people say it in the D.R.

Me, no Cari we don’t speak English down there, I was just saying the wrong thing.

Cari and Jon, practice that word mom.

Me, bling with a soft g, I just need to go to bed:)

Family Home Evening

Family home evening lessons are great tools for teaching important principles of the gospel. As we strive to have family home evening every Monday sometimes things don't go according to plan and most of the time we only get half of our children's attention except....this past Monday night, we focused on teaching the importance of telling the truth and what would happen if my children told a lie. We got started by using some examples, questions, a yarn string for wrapping the liar and role-plays. I volunteered to be the liar and Troy and I role-played the scene. I sat on a chair (the hot seat). Troy asked me to pretty much narrate my day. Troy asked “what did you do today at school?” I stated, I had a good time playing on the computer. He got the yarn out and started wrapping with it while the kids were saying yeah right you don’t like to play computer games--that’s a lie. Then I also said that I had gone to get James from pre-school and found out that he had eaten a grasshopper for lunch and The teachers had told me that he really liked it. James’s face was confused and he said that’s a lie I didn’t have a grasshopper for lunch. He began to cry while Troy continues to put more yarn around me. I think that the kids got the point of the lesson and even James got it. We told the children that it is best not to tell lies because sooner or later we will find out about it. It took James a little longer to grasp on the concept of the lesson and It wasn’t until I started saying things that didn’t happen at school, but I sure got his attention.

Time Managament

Class assignment-brochure titled time management. This assignment was kind of fun because I didn't have to think too hard about where all my time goes and how I am able to manage time with my family while going to school. The first subject that came to mind was procrastination. Then I started asking myself these questions from a book I read long ago called Peak Performance. What is something I should have accomplished by now but I haven't? Why did I procrastinate? What kinds of tasks do I put off? And how does procrastination affect others in my life? Out of all these questions my favorite is the last one. I hung on to this one question for a while. Because I think is very important to think about those that are around me all the time and when I want to procrastinate I ask myself that last question, are my actions affecting others. Also I decided to write all the things I dislike to do and really force myself to do them. I keep telling myself that even though I don’t like doing them I am better off just getting them done. These questions have really helped me put things into perspective.

An Old Picture( Goodbye At the Airport)

It is very difficult to say goodbye at the airport to your loved ones, because family is the greatest gift to have.

This picture has been with me since 2002 and every time I look at it my eyes get teary, because I miss the people in it.

My mom and dad are standing next to each other with my two children while my husband and I take their picture at the Airport.

Cari is six months old and Jonathan is two years old. My mom is holding my little Cari so tightly in her arms, which shows me the love she has for me through her. Their faces are pressed together as she hugs her

My mom’s expression is filled with sadness and tears. Now that I am a parent I can really understand how she feels inside.

My dad is looking through his glasses with a sad smile on his face while his hands are resting down on Jonathan’s shoulders who has a concern look on his face.

He is probably wondering why we are going back home without grandma and grandpa. I know my parents are happy to see me with my own family.

But I also know that saying goodbye to your children is hard even if it is just for a few hours while someone babysits.

I am so thankful to have a mom and dad who care about me and who are always there for me. Family unity is very important to me and I am lucky to have it even though we are far a way from each other.

Running Errands With my Baby

It didn’t occur to me that my son James was a well behaved kid until I had to run some errands at my school. After picking him up from preschool, we went back to the campus. James asked “were we going Mom?” I said “honey we have a lot of errands to run in campus today.” He said “Today, I am excited too see your school
mom.”

Our first stop was at the book store. He was so fascinated with the amount of pencils, books, notebooks etc. One of the coolest things of all was to see him just look at the books and pencils and not touch any of them.

Another of our stops was downstairs at the cashier’s window. We were there to pay for his preschool. We were in line for about five minutes and James just waited patiently for our turn.

Finally our last stop was the food court, again we had to wait in line but this time we waited for a little bit longer and James still behaved well. We got our yummy food and went to find a table to sit. We ate our yummies and then we left the school to go back home. I really had a great time with James today and I really love to see him grow and change as he gets older.

Jonathan's First Email And Blog.

Did you have an email or a blog account when you were 9 years old?—not me.

Technology is awesome. I Love when I can see my kids do things that I didn’t do when I was 9 years old.

Jonathan loves to write and read for fun, so I decided to get him started with a blog.

But I forgot that in order to have a blog with Blogger we needed to have an email account.

So I went to Gmail and got him ready to go.

After everything was ready he checked his email account right away to see if he had any emails and before I asked if he had any he said “yeah!—I have an email” I said who is it from, he replied “from daddy! It says, ’boooo! I bet you didn’t expect to get an email so soon--Sent from my iPhone!’” It makes me so happy to see him excited about having his own blog and email account.

Going Back To School

In the last two months I have been thinking a lot about school, whether I should go back or not. My schedule is a little bit busy, but I can always make room for growth.

In 1998 I was going to school and really liked a fashion design class that I had, but I wanted a degree in either fashion or interior design. The only place that I could take all the classes was out of state.

Recently I tried looking online through all the available resources that I can find. Interior and fashion design is now offered at various colleges here in Utah.

I am so so excited to start school and learn so much more about interior decorating. I won't start until summer semester.

A Grumpy Day Turned into a Happy Day

The coolest thing happen today! When I got home from work Jonathan showed me this awesome certificate, so I started reading it, it's from UTAH STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION. He is in the top ten percent in the nation on the Iowa Tests that he took this year in school. His areas of outstanding performance are: Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Total Composite score.

That made my day. He had a little grin that he was trying not to show but he couldn't hide it. It's fun to see when your kids feel a real sense of accomplishment and take a little pride in something that they have done.

Getting Used to a New Routine

I got myself a job working for Gold's gym, I guess I didn't think that I was busy when in reality I was.

Well let's see, I have three kids, two in school with a lot of homework all the time And my baby is two and a half now. I feel that this is a good thing for me.

I get up early, get ready and go to work with my baby. It has been three years since I worked. So for me it's like when I stopped working I didn't know what to do with my time and I started filling up my schedule slowly with things like: visiting parks, going to the dinosaur museum, scrapbooking, making jewelry and more stuff. You know mom stuff.

Now I still do all those thing but 5 hours of my day are spent working. So it's not bad I just need to do things right away and not put things on the back burner.

It has been four months since I stopped going to the gym, mainly because of gas prices! I couldn't justify spending so much money for gas.

I decided to run from home with James, him in the stroller of course!

So I am preparing mind and body for this. For me is like breaking in some new shoes.

I actually feel pretty confident that I can do this again! My goal is to be down a size or two and put back some of the muscle I lost!

I am not excited to the daily weigh in and the eating healthy thing. I need to keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat.

My favorite class is power pump! It's quite challenging but very good. My next favorite is yoga.

Funny things Happen in our house.

So, I think of myself as a pretty organizes person. I do deep cleaning twice a week and I do regular cleaning everyday. I love to have a clean house! Then I use can use plugins to make it smell good.

The kids each got new hampers for Christmas. And they know to put the laundry away including their socks. They do a pretty good must of the time!

But something mysterious is happening with our socks.

After I transfer the laundry from the washer to the dryer, somehow in that transition they get lost some where.

I think since I have the matches together when I go put them in the washer and then the dryer I should be able to find them right? It's funny to me that I can't find them.

So now I have all these socks that I can't find the matches for. Most of the socks are the kids.

Primary Calling

Ok , I am in the primary presidency! I have been in the primary for about eight months now and I really love it! It is so much fun to see the kids grow, develop skills and learn about the gospel. And to see how smart all of them are.

As I prepare Sharing time every month, I feel challenged! I pray and think of ways to teach both Junior and Senior Primary, I love when I come up with questions that I think the Junior primary might have a difficult time to answer, but no they have the answers to the questions, the are sure smart kids!

I also oversee scouts. When I was called to serve in the primary they said you will oversee scouts. I said " I don't know anything about Scouts"

That day I went home and looked up information on the internet and I found some good info there about scouts. And with some info from the stake I was feeling much better. I also went to the scout office in Orem. I asked someone for help! and oh my! I got so much more knowledge being there!

But the truth is that heavenly father really helps each one of us even when we feel incapable and inadequate.

Jonathan is now eight and his loves scouts! We have a pine wood derby coming up and I can't wait to see Jonathan's car! We need to get going on that.

Vacuum Disappointment

So, I bought a vacuum about two months ago, I mean only two months ago.
Before I stated vacuuming the Christmas mess" THE PINE NEEDLES" I cleaned the floor really well and picked up almost everything of the carpet by hand! I really wanted to take great care of this vacuum. I was thinking to myself this vacuum should last me a long time! Since I have picked up most of the needles I should be fine right? I don't really know what happened to the vacuum. I think it broke. I can't believe after I was so so so careful!

Christmas in the Dominican Republic:

People celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December but the Christmas season lasts all of December and part of January. They also have the same Santa as we do except he doesn't go down the chimney. For Christmas they have lots of food even the poor families have more food than they can eat. Dominicans celebrate Thanksgiving on the 24th of December they start eating and celebrating early in the day and don't stop till late that night. They get presents on Christmas and also give presents on January 6th which is called the day of kings. The day of kings is to remember the three wise men bringing gifts to Jesus. One really fun tradition that Dominicans do is called little angels. little angels is were friends and family draw names and give funny gifts to the person whose name they drew, without letting them know who gave it to them. Then on Christmas they give the person a really nice present and reveal who was the little angel.

I have been looking for a can opener for about four weeks. Looking for a can opener wasn't difficult, but finding a good one was! I decided to look at Target and I found one, I looked at Ross and found one also! So I got them both. I got home to try them out and the first can opener was so hard to use, I mean Horrible, I thought to myself "how hard can a can opener be right?" I told my husband "Maybe it's me, I can't open the cans." He comes over to help me and he couldn't either.

So then I tried the second can opener. That was worse than the first one. So I returned both of them. When I told the lady at the store that I couldn't seem to find one that worked, she didn't help much either. She said she had an electric one and two regular ones and none of them work either. So I was about ready to give up.

Then I remembered the Pampered Chef party I had a few months ago. The chef said they had a really good can opener. Pampered Chef is expensive but they have great quality so I decided I would try theirs. It came this week and I have to say "It's the best can opener EVER!"

It was so easy to use that I had to open a couple extra cans just for the sake of opening them and put the into the fridge. I guess I'll be cooking beans for a few days. :)

Growing up in the Caribbean.

Most of you know I grew up in a 3rd world country. It was fun growing up down there. Beautiful scenery, we took siestas, even the stores closed down for lunch time, weird huh? It was great. This time of year I really miss it more than any other time, especially my parents. I remember for one of my Christmas presents I got a huge doll, the doll was as tall as I was then, it was beautiful. One day when we have a lot of money I would like to buy a timeshare there!!! I have so many great memories. I also remember when I was about four years old, my grandma lived about half an hour away from my parents house. It was like night and day. There wasn't any power there, when 6:30 came around my grandma had her tealights and candles ready So we had some light.

When the power went out a while ago, I thought to myself I can survive with no power. It brought back memories from my grandma. I am so thankful to live in this wonderful world with the technology we have now. I love it. I am especially thankful for my wonderful husband. He is soooooo awesome.

We finally got our Christmas tree!

Eight years ago we decided to start a tradition. Getting a fresh cut tree. We love the smell of pine in the winter. We really did think how messy it was. The first year I thought that it was hard to clean up the mess and I didn't really want another real tree. The pine needles are really poky, our first tree skirt got damaged by the sap and one the our vacuums too. But that didn't stoped us from getting a fresh cut tree we only do this once a year and the pine needles aren't too bad. I love the time we get to spend together as a family and that makes it worth it . I just need to remember to be careful vacuuming.

Who Doesn't Like Pumpkin Chessecake and Pies?

Troy and I both love to bake, not just anything. We love baking pies and cheesecakes. You know the most unhealthy food ever! Or shall I say yummy!!! So last night we baked two cheesecakes and two pumpkin pies. One of my favorite "Pumpkin cheesecake" not to mention our strawberry cheesecake is also delicious. Now I am not trying to brag about our cheesecakes and pies but they are really good!!! Oh we also had some pie crust left over, I thought lets make something with it. Troy found some jam that my sister in law had made, and he made some turnovers filled with yummy jam, and sprinkled with sugar. I can't remember if it was plumb or something else. Anyway we still have some more baking to do! I will show you the finished product.

Eating Out.

I have been craving Pumpkin cheesecake so bad lately, I knew that we were going to The Cheesecake Factory for our anniversary. I love the cheesecake from there. So anyway we found someone to watch our kids for about three hours, we got ready and there we went! We finally got there, there was no parking spots so we parked a little bit farther than normal and my high heels where not very comfortable. So I got in line to wait my turn and ... the ladies said " it's going to be an hour an a half " So we decided that it was too long and we wouldn't be eating until almost 9:00pm. Troy and I decide to split, Troy said " I will go The Olive Garden to check how long the wait is" I said okay I can go to Macaroni Grill. "So here we go with my lovely heels and crossing this busy street" I said. "I hope I win." So of course the Olive Garden wins. They get their pies and cheesecakes from The Cheesecake Factory! So that's not too bad. We had spent all of our time parking and waiting for our turn. The funny part is that there is an Olive Garden in American Fork closer to us. Some times things don't go as planed.

You see, I can take a picture of James by himself and he smiles just fine but getting them together is a challenge for me.

James loves giving Troy kisses before he goes to work. I think that's cute, he can be so busy playing with his cars and a soon as he sees the door opening he stops and gives him kisses.

So, I asked Cari what she was going to be for Halloween, she said a Dalmatian...

"Really that's what you where last year, is there anything else that you rather be, like.... ummm a lion or something."

She kept saying "mom I really want to be a Dalmatian."

So I went to the store and I got her a Red Riding Hood costume and I said to Cari here is what I got you to wear for Halloween!

"That's what I wanted to wear!"

We had a great time trick or treating. But we won't try to go to the mall next time!

Christmas Shopping Too Early( Nov 10th)

I don't think that I will go shopping so early next year. I went and bought some things for Christmas, then I got home and try to wrap a few gifts, I heard the garage door opening and I hurry to tell the kids... tell your Dad not come into the house until I put all the stuff away. so that day was impossible to wrap anything. I try the next day got all of it done and then.... It got quite quiet for a few minutes and I thought I better go check and see what James is getting into, anyway to make the story short he had opened almost all the gifts that I had wrapped for Christmas. I said oh no, oh no but it was too late! I looked at him and he had the guiltiest face ever! I guess the terrible two's are here!!! I love my little James.

I finally found the right template!

I stated this blog about a week ago or so, and play with it for a while. This template is the right one for us! I posted some old pictures of my kids because I invited my mom to my blog and if you didn't know my Mom and Dad are 2,000 miles away. This is a great way to keep us in touch.

For me is a great reminder of my kids. I love it! I also put a picture of us taken out side the temple to remind our Family of the special covenant that we have made, when we look at it together my kids can see how important it is to me!

Have you ever gone some where because your kids want you to go? then you say I told you so. Well we did go see Thomas, but Jonathan didn't like when the train was coming in. So I thought how can I make this trip fun for all of us, So I rode with them on this little tiny train, I couldn't hardly fit! but it made them happy! what we do for our kids huh? All and all we had a great time!

I like to cook. When we moved almost a year ago, we got a gas stove/oven. And I have loved it.

Cooking with gas is so much better than an electric range. If you don't believe me, go watch the Food Network for a day and see how many cooks use an electric stove.

I don't think I ever want to cook on electric again. But gas stoves aren't perfect. They have this thing in them called gas. and when you get a bunch of gas together, it can be kinda dangerous. That's what I've heard anyway.

So I woke up at 6:30 this morning and walked out into the hall and smelled gas. Lots of gas. So I immediately ran and checked the stove. Sure enough, one of the dials was turned to low and didn't have a flame. It had been that way since we finished cooking late last night at about 10:00. Now the low setting is pretty low, but that's over 8 hours of gas seeping into the house. So I ran and opened all the windows and aired things out. They are still airing out.

So we got the kids off to school and banned sparks, flames, electrical switches, etc. for the whole day while the house finishes airing out.

It's kinda scary. I was nervous when I lit the pilot light when we moved in but this was way worse. Talk about nerve racking. So as of a couple hours ago, the house was still there. Hopefully, it'll finish airing out nicely and by tonight we'll have just a regular old house rather than a 24,000 cubic foot bomb.

The Coolest Scout Meeting I Have Ever Been to.

The theme was pony express. We had lots of pictures. Old west style. The cub master brought everything from hats to ropes. It was so awesome. Not to mention the food was delicious. We had a potato bar. And Troy didn't get ANY!!!! 'cause he was so busy taking all the pictures.

My kids had a great time running around making things a little bit difficult. All in all it was quite fun. Kudos to the scout committee.
